Job Description

The Office of Strategic Communication under the Assistant Vice President for External Relations is seeking a Writer/Editor to develop, write and pitch news and feature stories about the university’s people, programs, research, and activities in order to build the university’s brand position and increase understanding and trust with key internal and external stakeholders. One position will be hired for the beat area of Social Sciences.

This position will serve as a public relations and communication advisor and liaison to administrators, faculty and staff in assigned areas; offer counsel on working with news media; assist with developing communication strategies and plans; and provide communication support for institutionally important stories, events, and messages. In addition to a strong writing and public relations background, digital skills such as video production and social media marketing would be beneficial.

Required qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, marketing, journalism, English, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; one to three years related professional experience in journalism or public relations; excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to write effectively under deadline for a variety of purposes, audiences, and media; and media “pitching and catching” experience.

Three writing samples that demonstrate storytelling skills, writing competency, and ability to communicate about a variety of topics, along with a brief explanation of how the story was developed (particularly examples of successful placements in news outlets) should be submitted with the application.

Desirable qualifications include experience working in higher education; demonstrated organizational and collaboration skills; a demonstrated ability to think and plan across channels and develop effective communication strategies; and digital skills such as video production and social media marketing.

Salary is $40,000 to commensurate. Application deadline is January 19, 2018, and screening will begin immediately. Projected start date is March 1, 2018.
