The Outline is looking for a full-time staff writer for our future section, which is about how machines (technology) and human understanding (science) are changing and how those changes affect people.
The Outline’s future coverage is about demystification. Reporting about technology often makes it seem like humans are out of the loop — an algorithm did a thing, instead of a human doing a thing using an algorithm. Meanwhile, science can be treated like magic, with hand-waving instead of explanations and hyperbole instead of analysis. Our goal with future coverage is to be critical, but not pessimistic; forward-looking, but informed by history; and smart, but accessible.
In our view, demystifying the future doesn’t make it any less exciting. To the contrary: Truly understanding how things really work makes them more interesting.
This writer will be publishing 1-2 stories a day. They will also work on video and audio stories in production as well as on screen and on mic.
This is a full-time position with a preference for candidates in New York City, but a potential for remote.
