Job Description

We are looking for an experienced journalist and editor to lead coverage of politics and society at The Conversation US by working with political scientists, sociologists and historians to bring their ideas to the general public.
The ideal candidate will have proven, in-depth knowledge of American politics and history as well as significant experience working as an editor in a daily news environment.
As we continue to grow our newsroom and our audiences, this is a key position at The Conversation US.
The role
The Senior Politics and Society Editor will lead The Conversation US’s daily coverage of politics and social issues. The editor is expected to respond to current events by producing content that provides timely context and insight and, at the same time, to proactively seek out new academic research of relevance to the contemporary debate.
Reporting to the Deputy Editor, TCUS and supervising the work of the Associate Politics and Society Editor working in Atlanta, the Senior Politics and Society Editor develops story ideas on a daily basis, commissions articles from academics and researchers, and edits and prepares those articles for publication. The editor also “top edits” the work of the Associate Editor and is responsible for the overall coverage on the P&S desk. This editor must be widely read and well informed on a wide range of political and social issues - both US and international. The editor must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, daily news environment. Some travel is expected to make presentations and to lead writing workshops for academic researchers.
This role is well-suited to a journalist with at least 10 years’ experience covering politics, demonstrated experience of commissioning and editing, strong communication skills and the ability to manage relationships with key institutions and scholars.

We would prefer for this person to work out of our Boston office, but will consider an extraordinary candidate who needs to work remotely.

Job Requirements

The Senior Politics and Society Editor will demonstrate the following:
  • Excellent track record in editing daily journalism whether online, in print or on air
  • Proven experience of managing other journalists’ work
  • In-depth knowledge of political and social issues

  • Self-motivation, strong organizational skills, and an ability to work a daily deadline while manage multiple tasks
  • Success working as part of a collaborative team
  • Care and attention to detail
  • Experience in online production
  • A network of academic contacts and knowledge of international affairs would be a plus
