Job Description

Higher Education Reporter
CALmatters is a nonprofit nonpartisan journalism venture focused on California state politics and policy. Launched in 2015 and based in Sacramento with a staff of 14, it is now the largest bureau covering state policy issues as measured by staff size and/or audience reach.

We distribute our work online and through over 100 news organizations throughout the state, including all of California’s major newspapers, the four biggest public radio stations, and hyperlocal outlets like Patch’s 150 California sites. We also distribute our content through leading news portals and apps including Google News, Apple News and Smart News. Top news aggregators, Politico’s California Playbook, the New York Times’ California Today, and Rough & Tumble regularly feature our work.

We are looking for a multi-media journalist with a special focus on and passion for covering California higher education issues. This is a tremendous opportunity for a skilled writer and reporter who is passionate about storytelling and about making a difference. The beat will focus on the nation’s leading system of public higher education, which includes three public segments—the University of California (UC), the California State University (CSU), and the California Community Colleges. It also includes more than 150 private nonprofit colleges and about 200 for-profit institutions. In total, the state’s colleges and universities enroll more than 2.1 million students.

This is a full time position, preferably based at our main office in Sacramento. We like having the staff together there at least three days a week.

Responsibilities:
Excellent storytelling
This journalist will be an excellent writer and reporter and be comfortable engaging with our audience throughout the reporting process and after using social media and other engagement tools. Our multi-media packages include longform and short-form stories, using creative storytelling formats and tools, data visualizations, video and visuals to produce powerful narratives that make complex topics accessible and meaningful for civically engaged Californians.

Innovation
CALmatters is nimble, innovative, and experimental and we know not everything we try will be successful. This reporter will engage our audience during and after the reporting process using social media, new engagement platforms like Hearken and what we call Open Reporting to understand the interest in our topics and what that means for storytelling tools, language and topics.

Public events
Our journalists are public personalities. They reach audiences through social media, they appear on radio and television programs and they participate in live public events as panelists, speakers or moderators.

What we’re looking for…
…a great communicator…
  • Writing talent—longform, tweet-length and everything in between
  • A digger who can work with documents and sources to gain deep insight
  • Savvy about social media tools, platforms, and messaging styles
  • Comfort with public and broadcast media styles and making media appearances
  • Enjoys audience engagement, whether it’s through comments, new platforms like Hearken, or social media
…a passion for making a difference…
  • Strong interest in the higher education issues that are important to California
  • Interest in the policymaking process in California
  • Keen understanding about the demographic drivers in California
  • Experience covering education, higher education preferred
…a collaborator
  • Team-oriented, work well with others.
  • Contribute ideas to our innovation lab at CALmatters
Why work at CALmatters:
You get to join a talented team of media professionals dedicated to telling the stories of what happens in the state Capitol. We’re a startup, which means every team member has a significant hand in determining our direction and success. We have the financial backing of smart, politically diverse funders and foundations who strongly believe in and support our work. Plus, we offer:
  • Excellent health and retirement benefits
  • Regular workshops and trainings
  • Annual professional development stipend
We value diversity and and encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply.

Please email a resume or website url, samples of your work, and a cover letter explaining why you’re the right candidate to jobs@calmatters.org.
