The Connecticut Mirror is seeking an ambitious, aggressive, and adaptable general assignment reporter who can balance breaking news and enterprise stories with a focus on politics, public policy and statewide issues. Strong writing skills are a must.
· Accurately and thoughtfully report on any topic as assigned. · Fill in for specialty beat reporters. · Dissect complex public issues and explain them in a way that is relevant to readers. · Demonstrate a willingness to challenge powerful individuals and institutions. · Write clear, engaging, well-organized stories that capture both the principal elements and nuances of an event or issue. · Provide both breaking news coverage and enterprise stories with an emphasis on explanatory journalism. · Work collaboratively with your editor and other reporters and colleagues. · Demonstrate the ability to develop a part-time beat that aligns with The Mirror’s needs. · Use web and social media tools both to build audience for stories and as a reporting resource. · Take news photographs and shoot video. · Demonstrate a firm understanding of the use of data to explain and buttress stories and use basic digital tools to create graphics, charts and tables.
