Director of Media Relations
Office of Communications

Williams College seeks a Director of Media Relations, reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, who would work collaboratively with colleagues in the college's Communications office, the administration, and faculty to develop and implement strategies that effectively promote and build awareness of Williams. The Director will manage day-to-day interactions and actively cultivate relationships with the news media, serve as a college spokesperson, provide media training and consultation to faculty and administrators, and oversee the production and distribution of news releases.

Williams is a liberal arts college of 2,100 students, located in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. The Media Relations Director would:
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with the news media (local, regional, national, and international), serving as a college spokesperson, pitching stories, and responding to media inquiries
  • Develop and maintain contacts/relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others to identify, generate, and promote Williams news and feature stories
  • Work closely with the Chief Communications Officer to develop and implement long-term media strategy, including executive communications
  • Monitor media coverage and public discussion of Williams and lead efforts to manage the college's reputation in a principled way, with special attention to how this should be done in an educational setting
  • Contribute substantially to the preparation for and execution of emergency and crisis communications for the college; work closely with the Chief Communications Officer, the president and members of senior staff, Campus Safety and Security leadership, and local agencies and first responders others to provide effective, straightforward, consistent communication in times of crisis that reflects Williams values and is guided by legal and ethical considerations as well as by college policies
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues in the development of stories for the college website, content for social media, news videos, and an editorial calendar for media opportunities
  • Provide media training and editorial/media consultation (including op-ed development and placement) to faculty members and administrators
  • Manage vendor relationships for media tools
  • Supervise the work of student and/or freelance news writers
  • Participate as an active member of the college community, including in service on various college committees
 
 

Job Requirements

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent in education and experience, with at least 5 years of relevant experience in media relations, journalism, or strategic communications
  • Experience covering higher education as a journalist or in media relations within higher education is preferred, as is expertise with social media and a wide variety of web publishing and media tools
  • Excellent judgment, impeccable integrity and reliability, and high ethical standards that engender trustworthiness
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and an engaging interpersonal style
  • Capacity to respond to and manage crisis situations and to communicate clearly and accurately about complex and/or sensitive issues
  • Ability to think and act both strategically and tactically
  • Collaborative work style and expertise in building relationships and partnerships with a broad array of internal and external stakeholders, including members of the news media
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills (listening, verbal, and written)
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and to building/supporting inclusive communities
  • Expertise in managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated professionalism, ability to maintain confidentiality
