WRAL is seeking a thoughtful and thorough reporter to produce enterprising, unique work for digital and broadcast platforms. The successful candidate should be familiar with local and statewide issues, government, and politics. This individual should be prepared to contribute quick reports on daily action at the state legislature and to pitch stories that delve deep into the hows and whys behind it.
The following characteristics and qualifications are essential: unquenchable curiosity, outstanding contacts, refined interviewing skills, superb storytelling abilities, next-generation research skills, a credible and comfortable presence on camera and the ability to deliver drafts close to publication standard. Experience in making public records requests and reviewing databases is required. Experience in broadcast media is preferred. An understanding of the needs and habits of news consumers and the ability to explain complex topics to a busy audience using multimedia – including but not limited to written text, photos, video and interactive presentation elements – is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary; should be familiar with AP style. Three years of previous experience reporting in local news, a four-year college degree, and a pre-employment drug screening are required.
